To Las Cruces

2019 July 20 – from Flores

There wasn’t much to this ride. We were simply splitting the distance to get to La Técnica; the Guatemala border town with the boats to Frontera Corozal where Mexican immigration is located.

It’s really too long to do in one shot from Flores. Especially since you have to pass through Guatemala immigration for the exit stamp at Bethel. The road from Las Cruces gets muddy and the last 20K to La Técnica is pretty difficult with rocky climbs and descents. Las Cruces is the last town that has lodging and happens to also be about the mid point. The ideal place to stop.

We hit the usual downpour just before the turn to El Cruces right at a military outpost on the El Subin river. We hung out under the roof of the bus station while waiting for it to pass. The only pictures were taken from there. Look closely at the gate at the entrance to the military compound!

Total distance: 73.11 km
Max elevation: 237 m
Min elevation: 111 m
Total climbing: 1270 m
